Ryuk is the Shinigami (a.k.a. Death God) who dropped the Death Note into the human world. We learn quickly that he did this out of boredom. Seems there isn't much to do in the Shinigami realm except gamble and nap.

Ryuk is intrigued by humans and enjoys following Light around. He is especially fond of human apples, which he tried the first evening he met Light.
