Chapter Nine

“Bye. I’ll see ya guys later,” Sota said waving to his friends who were in a car. He was now in the tenth grade. He had grown a lot taller as well. His hair remained the same and he was wearing his school uniform.

He began going up the steps to his house. Before he went in, he stopped in front of the Go-Shinboku Tree. He then remembered the day Inuyasha had come to tell him, his mom, and grandpa that Kagome had died. That day they were standing at this very same spot. He was playing with Buyo and the cherry blossoms that were coming off the tree. His mom was raking the yard watching him and Buyo happily. His grandpa was watching the cherry blossoms happily. A couple of minutes later, Inuyasha came. He looked all sad and hopeless. Sota had wondered what was wrong with him and asked. All Inuyasha did was shake his head and say that they should go inside. Sota’s mother had refused to and asked where Kagome was. At the mention of her name, they could tell that something bad had happened because Inuyasha had winced at the name and a tear had gone down his cheek. His mother then realized what had happened and had asked if she was dead. When Inuyasha hadn’t answered, they knew that she was. Sota’s grandpa demanded to know who killed her. He asked Inuyasha how had she died. Inuyasha answered their questions. Sota, his mother, and grandpa began crying. Inuyasha left them as he tried to stop himself from crying as well.

Sota sighed and went into his house. “Mom, I’m home.”

His mom came out of the kitchen where she was starting to cook dinner. Ever since Kagome’s death, she hadn’t smiled. If she had, it was always a fake smile. She now had gray hair in some places. “Oh. Good. You’re home.” She smiled weakly and went back into the kitchen. “Your grandpa is in the hospital for his treatment.”

Sota sighed. How could he forget that? After Kagome’s death, his grandpa had gotten into a serious accident. While he was at the hospitable, the doctor had found out that he had leukemia and that that must’ve been the reason for the accident to happen. Ever since then, Sota and his mom would have to take the grandpa to the hospitable every once in a while for treatment or a check up or both.

Sota went up to his room, took his backpack off, grabbed out his homework, and began doing it. Sis, why did you have to die? You were the one thing that held this family together.

Anna got up. “Well, I think it’s best Sharon and I go home. It’s been a long day.”

Sharon frowned. “I don’t want to go.”

Anna put her hammer down. “We have to. We have school tomorrow.” She looked towards Nina. “Are you coming?”

Nina thought about this and was about to answer when Kagome interrupted her.

“Home? School? I haven’t been to those places in such a long time,” Kagome said. She looked towards Izumi. “And I want our daughter to have an education.”

“Feh. Kagome, she’ll be fine,” Inuyasha said. “Why don’t you go visit your family? They’ll be happy to see you. The well still works, you know.”

                                      Kagome’s eyes lit up. “Really?”

                                      Inuyasha nodded.

“Great!” She hugged Inuyasha. “You’re the best!”

Inuyasha hugged her back. “Anything for you.”

“Can I come with you?” Nina asked. “I’ve always wanted to go to Japan.”

                                      Kagome nodded.

                                      “Great!” Nina said smiling.

Anna and Sharon left. Kagome and Nina soon followed them.

Sota finally finished his homework and put it away. He then turned on the Playstation 2 and began playing Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. The phone rang.

“Sota, phone,” his mom called up the stairs.

Sota picked up the phone that was on his nightstand. “Hello?”

“Hey, Sota. What’s up,” one of his friends asked.

Sota sighed. “What is it, Inukai?”

“Heh, just wanted to know if you knew the answer for number twenty-three on our math homework,” Inukai said.

“Yes, but I’m not giving it to you,” Sota said.

Inukai groaned. “Come on. Pretty please.”

“Besides, who says the homework’s the same?” Sota asked. “You’re in ninth grade, remember?”

“I know,” Inukai said. “It’s just, you were in ninth grade last year, so you should know the answer.”

“What if they change the homework every year?” Sota asked. “Then you would have the wrong answer.”

Inukai muttered something then said, “Fine. Be that way.” He hung up.

Sota did, too. He then looked out the window to see two people come out of the mini shrine. Who would be out there this late? He ran out of his room and down the stairs.

Nina looked around the place in awe. She and Kagome had just come out of the well and were now outside of the mini shrine. “You live in a great place. I wish I lived here. Then I could watch all my favorite animes uncut with no dubbing or nothing.”

“Uhh, I guess,” Kagome said. She then stopped and stopped Nina as she saw someone approaching them. “Who’s there?”

The figure immerged. Kagome saw it was a boy wearing a school uniform. “I should be asking you that.” The boy began observing Kagome. His eyes widened. “Kagome?”

                                      Kagome nodded. “Are you… Sota?”

                                      The boy nodded.

A smile reached Kagome’s face and she hugged Sota. “I’ve missed you, Mom, and Grandpa so much.”

Sota just stood there unsure of what to do. He then patted her back. “There, there. Let it all out.” He then looked behind Kagome’s shoulder to see Nina. Kagome finally released him. “Umm, who’s your friend?”

“Huh?” Kagome asked. She then looked back at Nina to see she was smiling. “Oh.” She turned to face Sota again. “That’s Nina.”

“Is she a demon?” Sota asked becoming serious.

Nina saw the cold look in his eyes at the word demon and realized that he must’ve been really mad at Inuyasha and must’ve started hating demons after he had found out Kagome had died. Nina looked towards Kagome.

Kagome looked at Sota astonished at the coldness in his eyes. “Well, what does it matter if she’s demon or not?”

“Because all demons are evil,” Sota said.

“No, they’re not,” Nina said as Kagome was about to reject to that comment as well. “Some are really good. You don’t think Inuyasha is evil, do you?”

“Of course I think Inuyasha’s evil,” Sota snapped.

Nina and Kagome flinched at the harshness in his voice.

“Why do you hate Inuyasha?” Kagome asked softly.

“Because he failed in protecting you,” Sota said.

Kagome glared at him. “It is not Inuyasha’s fault.”

“Why do you take his side?!” Sota demanded.

“Because I love him and he’s my husband,” Kagome said.

Sota looked at her shocked. “How-how could you marry that monster?!”

“Inuyasha’s not a monster!” Nina and Kagome cried.

“In fact he and I now have a daughter,” Kagome said.

                                      Sota gasped. “I’m-I’m telling.”

                                      “Go ahead,” Kagome said.

Just then they heard footsteps. All three of them stopped talking and turned to face the person that was coming in their direction. It was Kagome and Sota’s mother.

“Sota, who are you talking to?” his mother asked.

“No one, Mom. Go back in,” Sota said.

His mother turned back towards the house. “Okay.” She began leaving.

                                      “Mom,” Kagome said.

Her mother turned around to face Kagome. Her eyes lit up as a smile reached her face. “Kagome? Kagome is it really you?”
                                      Kagome nodded.

“Mom, don’t trust her,” Sota said. “She calls demons good and she married Inuyasha and had a kid with him.”

“Kid? Surely you don’t mean the girl behind her,” his mom said.

Nina shook her head. “No. I’m just a friend.”

Their mother let out a sigh and looked back towards Kagome. “So, where is she?”

                                      “Mom,” Sota said.

“Quit your complaining,” his mom snapped. “Your sister is back and this is the way you treat her? I thought I taught you better than that.”

                                      Sota sighed and muttered something.

“Why don’t you two come in for some tea or something?” their mother asked.

                                      “Sure,” Nina said excitedly.

                                      Kagome nodded and smiled.

                                      They entered the house.

Inuyasha entered a cave. “Hey, old man, you in here?”

“Who’s there?” a voice asked. “Is that you, Myoga?”

Inuyasha went deeper into the cave to see Totosai. “No, it’s me.”

Totosai groaned. “And what do you want?”

                                      Inuyasha unsheathed the broken Tessaiga.

Totosai grabbed the Tessaiga from him and began crying. “You broke it. Now it is beyond repair.”

“Beyond repair?! You gotta repair it!” Inuyasha said.

“Hmm, well there is one way,” Totosai said picking up what looked like big tweezers. “Say ahh.”

Inuyasha did. Totosai put the tweezers in his mouth and pulled out one of his fangs. Inuyasha cried out in pain and hit Totosai on the head.

“Why’d you do that for?!” Inuyasha demanded.

“Well, the Tessaiga was formed from your father’s fang,” Totosai said. “But since you had to go and break the sword in half, I need a new fang. This’ll do perfectly well.”

Inuyasha muttered something along the lines of crazy old men and manipulation.

“Oh, I see. So, you were wounded by Naraku and didn’t die,” Kagome’s mother said.

Sota grunted and slightly looked towards Nina

Kagome saw this and elbowed Nina in the side.

                                      Nina looked towards her confused.

Kagome moved her head towards Sota’s direction.

Nina continued looking at her confused.

Kagome shook her head and muttered, “Never mind.”

Nina looked at her still confused and shrugged.

Sota sighed and got up. “May I be excused?”

                                      His mother nodded.

Sota took one last glance at Nina and ran back to his room.

His mother watched him. As soon as he was gone, she turned back to face Kagome and Nina. “You’ll have to excuse him. Ever since Inuyasha told us that you had died, he’s been blaming Inuyasha and hating all demons.”

“Just like in Feudal Era Japan,” Nina said. “If you’re a half-breed it is always always your fault. You’re the first person to get blamed for everything. Even if you didn’t do it. That’s how Inuyasha had to live and that’s how Jinenji had to live until Kagome and Inuyasha came and showed the villagers he was a good person.”

“Oh. I see,” Kagome’s mother said. “What about you? Are you a demon?”

“Well, according to Inuyasha and Sango, I’m half demon,” Nina said.

“You are,” Kagome said. “I sense a demon aura around you. I always have since we met.”

                                      Nina nodded.

“So, you’re half demon,” Kagome’s mother said. “You don’t look it.”

“Well, I do have fangs, but you really can’t tell,” Nina said. She put her hair behind her ears. “And I have slightly elfish-like ears. I have claws usually when I’m fighting to defend myself. That’s usually the only time they’ll appear. My eyes appear gold every once in a while. Umm, I have a sensitive nose, I guess. I have good hearing. Umm, I think that’s about it.”

Kagome’s mom nodded. “Well, it’s getting late. Why don’t you two stay the night?”

                                      “Cool,” Nina said smiling.

                                      Kagome nodded.

“Inuyasha, you do realize this may take all night, right?” Totosai asked.

                                      Inuyasha grunted. “Whatever.”

                                      Totosai sighed.

Nina ran into the bathroom to change into her pajamas. Kagome went into her room to wait for Nina.

Sota, who was still in his room, got off his bed. He then went over to his door and opened it slightly making sure no one was in the hallway. As he saw that the coast was clear, he ran in front of the bathroom door. He was about to knock when the door opened. Sota’s eyes widened as he began to blush.

Standing there was Nina in her pajamas. She wore a light purple spaghetti strap shirt that said always an angel all over the place with little pink stars and matching short shorts.

                                      She smiled. “Hi, Sota.”

Sota blinked and then realized he was staring and turned away. “Umm, hi.” He then regained his composure and looked back towards her. “You’re a half demon. You shouldn’t be here.” With that said, he went into the bathroom closing the door behind him.

Nina looked at the bathroom door puzzled. What’s with him? She shook her head and went into Kagome’s room.

“So, where do you want to sleep?” Kagome asked. She was wearing her pajamas, too. Although, they were a little small and kind of tight for her now since she wore them when she was fifteen and was now twenty-two. She wore a sky blue long sleeved shirt with little black cats all over it and was a little above her belly button and matching pants that now only went a little above here ankle.

Nina smiled. “I think we’re going to have to go shopping for new clothes for you tomorrow.”

Kagome smiled. “Yeah. I guess you’re right.”

Nina then remembered the way Sota acted and her smiled turned to a frown. “You know, I think I liked your brother better when he was only a little kid. He was a lot nicer. Now he’s all weird and kind of cold hearted.”

Kagome sighed. “Well, you heard what Mom said. He doesn’t like demons anymore since he thinks they’re all evil because of what happened to me.”

“Yeah, but that still isn’t a good reason,” Nina said.

Just then the two heard a knock on the door.

                                      “It’s opened,” Kagome said.

Sota opened it. “You guys had better not be here tomorrow because one of my friends are coming over. He thinks Kagome’s dead and I don’t want to have to explain why she suddenly is alive. That, and the fact that there’s a half demon here, too.” As he said this, he looked everywhere, but at Nina. He then left as quickly as he came.

“See. I told you,” Nina said.

Kagome ignored her and smiled. “You know, he was looking everywhere, but at you. I think he has a crush on you.”

Nina frowned. “Well, I don’t think I could go out with a guy who doesn’t like demons or half breeds.”

Kagome chuckled. “Yeah. Well, I didn’t think I could marry a guy who was violent, insensitive, immature, inconsiderate-“

“Okay. I know the whole list,” Nina said. “I used to say the same thing to Anna whenever we talked about Inuyasha.”

“Well, anyway, I did marry him, didn’t I,” Kagome said. “Turns out that’s what makes him so great. Besides, that’s what makes it all the better because you realize that once he reveals his good side, that’s what you’ve been waiting for. And then you realize why you’ve always put up with his bad side because you just can’t wait to see his good side.” She let out a sigh.

Nina shook her head. “Thanks goodness I’ve never had a boyfriend.”

“Huh?” Kagome asked snapping out of her dreamy state. “You’ve never had a boyfriend?”

Nina nodded and sighed. “It’s only because my parents said I couldn’t have one until I was eighteen. But then my dad said fifteen. My mom said it was eighteen. So, now I’m all confused. I asked my mom a couple of months ago and she said the same thing again.” She growled in frustration. “So, I always have to give the same old lame excuse whenever someone asks me out. ‘My parents say I can’t have a boyfriend until I’m eighteen. I’m sorry. I’m sure we can be good friends, though.’ The excuse does come in handy sometimes, though, especially if I don’t want to go out with the guy. The whole friend thing had only worked on two guys I know, though. The first one, who happened to be the first person to ask me out which was in the sixth grade, was Rupert. I didn’t know what to do because I didn’t want to go out with him, but I also didn’t want to hurt his feelings. I thought he was just some chubby, ugly kid, but I was wrong. I told him the excuse. Turns out he became my friend and a really good one at that. The, um, let me see, I believe he was the sixth person to ask me out, was Andy. I’m really not sure why I didn’t want to out with him, but it was in the eighth grade when he asked me out. I told him the same excuse I gave everyone else who asked me out. He became a friend to me. He still likes me more than that, though.” She sighed.

Kagome smiled. “Sounds to me like you do want a boyfriend.”

Nina glared at her. “I do not. I have no time for a boyfriend! I still have school to deal with! And I’m only fifteen years old!”

Kagome’s smiled widened. “That’s the same excuse I used with Koga when he asked me out. Of course, I, um, kind of went with Inuyasha despite that excuse, but, then again, Koga had asked me to marry him.”

“Well, you’re married to Inuyasha, aren’t you?” Nina asked. “Plus, don’t you both have a daughter?”

Kagome blushed. “Umm, yeah, but-but that’s different.”

Nina rolled her eyes. “Kagome, how old is Izumi?”

“She’s three years old. Why?” Kagome said.

Nina’s face turned to a look of deep thought.  “So, you were nineteen when she was born?”

                                      Kagome nodded.

“How old were you when you married Inuyasha?” Nina asked.

“Um, I think I was seventeen or eighteen,” Kagome said. “Before Izumi was born, I still had the Shikon Jewel and we had already killed Naraku, or so we thought, when I was still fifteen.”

“Then you knew of Sakura and Kai?” Nina asked. Maybe I can solve this whole thing if I ask Kagome a lot of questions.

“Um, let me see,” Kagome said as a look of deep thought appeared on her face. “No. I didn’t. Sango and Miroku hadn’t had children as far as I knew. They must’ve kept the kids in Kaede’s care while they left to go with us. Of course, Sango was gone a lot for some mysterious reason when I was seventeen and eighteen. Miroku said she had other business to take care of. I didn’t really buy that story, though. When I was nineteen and Sango had finally come back to join us, I tried to find out why she had been gone lately. Then we all decided that we no longer had any need to travel anymore and could stay at Kaede’s. Kaede never did let us into her hut for some odd reason. She always let Miroku and Sango in. I started getting suspicious, as I’m sure the others were, too. Shippo didn’t pay any attention to it. So, since we couldn’t stay in Kaede’s hut, Inuyasha and I spent a lot of time in the forest. Well, one day, I had just gotten back from my time and we had decided it was time to purify the jewel. I wasn’t sure what to do and so I decided to ask Inuyasha what I should do with it. The rest you know all ready. I’m sure everyone’s told you.”

Nina looked down at the ground. “Um, actually, I kind of saw it.”

“Huh?” Kagome asked looking at Nina puzzled.

“Well, I can have these visions, as you should know since…” Wait a sec! There is seriously something wrong here. Didn’t Sesshomaru say Kagome died seven years ago? Nina thought.

Naraku sighed as he pulled his right wrist out of a bowl filled with green liquid. He looked at his wrist. “Inuyasha, you will not get away with this.” He put his wrist back into the bowl. Just then, a guard came into his room. Naraku glared at him sending the poor man to walk back a couple of steps. “What do you want?!”

“Uh, L-Lord Naraku, m-my apologies f-for disturbing y-you,” the guard stuttered. “B-but we h-have gotten information th-that the priestess, Kagome, and the girl, Nina, have gone t-to their w-world. The-they’re planning o-on going shopping to-tomorrow.”

“I see,” Naraku said. He smiled. “I have the perfect plan.” Time to use my special weapon.

Nina sighed. “I’ll sleep on the floor.” She yawned.

Kagome nodded and quickly left her room. A couple of minutes later, Kagome came back carrying a bunch of blankets. She then made a bed for Nina on the floor. Kagome then lied down on her own bed as soon as she was done making Nina’s. She covered herself. Nina lied down on the bed Kagome had made for her and covered herself.

“Good night,” Kagome said turning off the light.

                                      “’Night,” Nina said yawning.

                                      The two girls fell asleep.

Sota sighed as he lied down in his own bed. That girl, she makes me feel… happy. Why? Just then his phone rang. He looked at his clock that was right next to his phone. It read 11:27. He raised an eyebrow in wonder of who would be calling at this time of night. Deciding he didn’t want the phone to wake anyone, he picked it up and whispered, “Hello?”

“Hey, it’s Inukai,” the voice on the phone said.

“Inukai?! Why are you calling at this time of night?!” Sota demanded.

“Well, what do you say you take a break from your homework and we go to the mall tomorrow?” Inukai asked.

“What?! I can’t! Are you out of your mind?!” Sota demanded.

                                      “Why not?” Inukai asked.

“Because I have a math test, a chemistry test, and an English test coming up and I need to study for them,” Sota said.

“You’ve been studying for those this whole week,” Inukai said. “You need a break from it all. Besides, you study for those tests as often as you do for the SAT’s that I, thankfully, don’t need to take yet.”

“Well, some of us want to get good grades and get into good universities,” Sota said.

Inukai sighed. “Can you please come with me?”

Sota sighed in frustration. “Fine, but if I get an ‘F’, I am so blaming it on you.”

“Great. See ya at eight. Sayonara.” With that, Inukai hung up.

Sota let out another sigh and hung up. He then lied back down and fell asleep without the realization that he had just made the biggest mistake of his life.
