Chapter Eight: Ernest Reborn

Skai crept down through the hallways making no sound at all. She unlocked a door using her telekinesis. She flicked on the lights and walked around. This was the room where things were put to remember the people that had died. She stopped in front of each one reading it carefully. She finally stopped in front of one and lay down her things. She started setting up. She put a kind of pot in front of her. She threw in a match and the pot lit up. There had been five strings of candlewick in it but around it was gasoline. She pulled out her bottles of stuff and started saying:

Ancient gods of Earth and Sky,

Raise high, Adds some green powder and blue powder to the fire.

Bring back from the dead,

Ernest Cuore as real as this lead, she lay down a giant stick of lead.

Help me with this saviour spell,

Bring him back so he may tell,

Of his life slept away,

Five months from today, Adds purple powder and a drop of blood.

Let him live just one more time,

He has committed no evil or crime, Puts a dagger beside the stick of lead.

He will be good and protect Zion heartily,

Let him guard the civilization you created gleefully, lays down a globe ball beside other things

I give you my thanks,

You are of the top ranks,

Now I’ll lend you my power,

To bring back this flower!

And with that a great gust blew through blowing out the fire and turning out the lights. Sparks of coloured light floated around Skai as she stood in a praying position muttering a spell in Japanese. The sparks started to slow down and placed themselves before Skai slowly forming the shape of a boy. As soon as it was done Skai fell to her knees and then she fell forwards for lack of energy.

The boy slowly woke up. He sat up slowly holding his head. He looked at Skai and looked around on the ground. All of her stuff had disappeared but Ernest had never known it was there. He picked up Skai and walked out the door to what used to be his room. He unlocked the doors and turned on the lights. He looked towards the bed. Erts? He was talking to his brother through their telepathy.

Erts woke up almost immediately. He had felt his brothers’ presence. Now he looked at the doorway. It was him!

“Ernest! You’re back! But how?” asked Erts happily.

“I don’t know. I remember dying, and then waking up to find this girl lying beside me.” Said Ernest motioning to the girl he was carrying on his back.

Erts nodded and they lay her down on the bed. He put his hand on her head trying to read her thoughts. A picture formed in his mind. He saw a bed and Skai was sleeping in it. He looked around the room; it was purple and blue like the Sora-Novus. Curtains were covering the windows and his brother stood near the door. It was a nice room. He walked towards the bed and tapped Skai lightly. She opened her eyes and looked at him.

“Hello.” She said friendly. “Welcome to my dream world. I tend to spend lots of time here.” She looked towards the door at Ernest. “If you’re here that means it worked.”

“What worked?” asked Ernest and Erts at the same time.

“Nothing.” Said Skai getting up and walking over to the window. “I hold many secrets here. Some even I haven’t unlocked yet. Behind every door in this house is one of my secrets and nobody knows. When someone has found out a secret the door opens and hollows out awaiting a new secret. There are millions of rooms in this house. You could try to look for the one secret you’re looking for and never find it. So you might as well get out of my head and leave me to my own thoughts.” She turned and looked at the two boys. They nodded and slowly the room disappeared along with the girl. They opened their eyes again and found they were back in Erts/Ernest’s room.

“So much for that.” Said Ernest facing his brother. “So what did happen after I apparently died?”

“I became a pilot and, well, I’m part of the group.” Said Erts looking admiringly at his brother.

“Let’s go get Gare! I bet he’ll be so glad to see you!”

‘Knock knock’ “Gare get up! Come quick!” Gare heard the young Erts yell outside his door.

“Leave me alone Erts I’m tired.” He shoved his head under his pillow.

“But Ernest is back! He’s in my room!” said Erts.

Gare opened the door and looked at Erts’s excited face. “Don’t you remember? Ernest died fighting the Victim.” Pointed out Gare looking quizzical.

“Yes I know. And now he’s back!” Erts grabbed Gare’s arm and pulled him away.

Seeing that he had no choice, Gare followed him. Erts knocked on the door of his room. It opened and there stood Ernest alive and well. He smiled at Gare and said hello. It was all Gare could do to gasp he was so amazed.

“So…um…how did you…um…come back?” asked Gare curiously.

“We dunno.” Said Erts frowning. “It has something to do with Skai though.” He pointed to the girl lying on the bed.

“How do you know she did something?” asked Gare.

“She was right beside me when I woke up.” Said Ernest looking confused.

“We shouldn’t tell anybody about Skai. She doesn’t like all the attention.” Said Erts honestly.

“Ya but how do we explain Ernest’s return?” pointed out Gareas.

“I dunno.” Said Erts frowning again.

Just then the body on the bed stirred. Skai was waking up.

Her vision blurred and Skai could make out figures around the room. They wore white and blue. She couldn’t quite tell who they were yet. She just looked on and tried to see the objects around her.

“Skai? It’s me. Erts.” Said a young boy’s voice.

Erts? She asked herself. Oh Erts! Ernest’s brother. What’s he doing here?

“Skai? Are you awake?” Gare’s voice sounded through her head.

Gare’s here too? Ugh I’m so confused. Where am I?

She tried to sit up but she was still too weak. She blinked again and again trying to clear the blurriness. Finally she could see things clearly. She looked at Erts then Gare then Ernest.

“It worked.” She managed to croak but her voice seemed badly damaged. “Can’t…speak,” she mumbled through her hurt voice. She pointed to her head and Erts nodded. He put his hand on her head and slowly the colours of the room started to change. The colours changed from whitish blue to purple and blue. Suddenly he was back in Skai’s thoughts. It was the same room he had been in before.

“How did you bring back my brother?” asked Erts immediately.

“Why do you need to know?” Skai snarled. The past week had changed her dramatically.

“Because we all want to know.” Was Erts’s’ reply.

“I brought him back because I wanted to bring the attention to someone else ya happy now?” she growled back. She punched the wall and left a dent in it. She was mad and she didn’t really want to talk about it.

“Well why my brother?” pressed Erts.

“Because I thought you and Tune missed him. Yes it’s true I could’ve brought back anyone but I thought your brother was fascinating and you and he are special. I’m not sure why, but I know you are. Why are you asking me all these questions?” she yelled. Why do you have to be here? Why do I have to be on this stupid ship? WHY ERTS WHY?!?!?!?!” she yelled this several times and Erts got out of her thoughts.

When he emerged into reality he saw that Skai was crying. She still couldn’t sit up but she was tired and upset. Erts thought they should put her back in her dorm so they did, silently so as not to wake the other girls. They lay her down and left her to her own thoughts and pondered on theirs.

The next day Azuma sent Skai to the doctor to see what was wrong. The doctor couldn’t find anything so she sent her off with a temporary muteness, which was true. Everyone had found out about her bringing back Ernest and now they all had questions. Because she couldn’t talk she punched the nearest person in the face and walked off. She had hit Zero. She skipped the rest of training that day and went to think with her mecha. She sat on the shoulder guard and pulled her legs to her chest. How could I be acting like this? I should be honoured to be a candidate on the GOA. But something doesn’t feel right. I feel out of place. Like I don’t belong. She thought quietly to herself. She was so lost in thought she didn’t here someone enter. She didn’t hear them coming up the ladder to her Ingrid until they were sitting right beside her. She looked up and saw Rioroute looking at her.

She waved her hand as if to say hello.

“I heard you brought back Ernest.” He said. This was a bad start to a conversation with Skai. She rolled her eyes and looked away. “The rest of the pilots just wanted to say thanks.” She kept looking the other way and put her chin on her knees. “Okay I’ll stop stalling, everyone just wanted to know how you did it.” He said shrugging his shoulders. Skai grabbed a pad of paper and pencil using her telekinesis. When it got to her hands she started scribbling down words. It ended up looking like this:

I used a form of black magic called “Kenyo” and all I wanted was for people to leave me alone! What is wrong with you people on GOA? All you do is ask questions and you seem so oblivious to everything around you. Wars could break out between colonies soon and you’d never know because you’re too busy protecting a dying planet! Why can’t you people wake up and look around? Think of the bigger problems around here!

She thrust the pad at him and he read. He looked up and she had her back to him again. She was trying to be small and unnoticed. Rioroute left seeing that she wanted to be alone and went off to digest her words. The bigger problems? What did she mean?

As he left Skai cried to herself. She hated the GOA life. She didn’t like it one bit. She wanted to leave but knew she would dishonour her family if she did. She decided to stay on GOA helping the goddesses when needed. But how long would she be able to hold up here?
