Chapter 3

The Wolf Rises from the Shadows

Saito and Tokio had lived very well together over the past few years…their relationship was well, Tokio was a loving woman and she love him as he loved her.  Saito would continue with his undercover police work, many times she would prefer that would do something less dangerous…but also knew that he was no weakling.

***

One night, she and Saito were visited by Ōkubo Toshimichi, he and the chief of police in Tokyo said they had important business to speak of.  Tokio excused herself but kept her ears open and listened to their conversation…she heard something of an old imperial assassin in Kyoto named Shishio Makoto…and something about a young man with a cross-shaped scar living here at the Kamiya Dojo.

            “Is that so,” Saito said.

“Yes it is…if at all possible we need you to talk to him…we may need his help,” Lord Okubo said.

“I will make it a point to visit with him as soon as I can,” Saito said,” but first…I have take care of some other business…some one corrupt will face my brand of justice.”

“Saito…you follow the orders form the police department,” the police chief snapped,” do not forget that!”

“As a former member of the Shinsegumi…I dispense my own brand of justice…you can train a dog with food…train a man with money…but you can not train a wolf,” Saito said.

The Police Chief was about to say something when Lord Okubu said,” I understand your reasons Mr. Saito…but I do hope you will be able to convince Mr. Himura to help us.”

“I’ll test him…we’ll see if this wanderer is same man I remember from before,” Saito said with a chuckle.

Lord Okubo and the Police Chief soon left, then Tokio stepped out and Saito turned toward her and saw the concern in her eyes.

“Please be careful…it sounds like this Shishio and this Himura are surviving manslayers from the Revolution,” Tokio said then smiled saying,” I know you are strong…but you are not immortal dear.”

Saito smiled as he wrapped his arms around her and said,” Not to worry…I have yet to be defeated and these men will not be the ones to beat me.”

“Never defeated huh,” Tokio said,” what about the night we met…don’t forget that I spared your life that night.”

“T…that one doesn’t count,” Saito said with a cough,” in any case…that was the…wolf pouncing on his prey.”

“So now I’m prey,” Tokio said with a frown.

“Uh…that is…I…I have to do my rounds now,” Saito said as he picked up his sword and traveled out of his home.

Tokio smirked as he took off then thought to herself,’ I’ll deal with you when you get home.’

***

The next day, Saito left Mr. Shibumi’s office dressed as a merchant with a medicine chest strapped to his back.  A smile crossed his face as he strolled up to the Kamiya Dojo…a certain sense of nostalgia crossed his mind…the get up he had was the same the Shinsegumi wore during the revolution…the Battousai would undoubtedly recognize him.

***

Unfortunately, the Battousai was not home, but Saito was kind enough to leave a message with the former “fighter for hire” Zanza or rather Sagara Sanosuke.  It wasn’t until the next evening that, that Saito got the opportunity to battle his old arch rival…unfortunately the battle ended in a draw seeing how Lord Okubo and the police chief arrived to stop them.  Saito had more important things to worry about…or rather the assassin Akamatsu and his employer Shibumi were the ones who should be worrying…worried of the Shinsengumi law Aku Soku Zan…after all, those who were evil would be slayed immediately, and they were not exempt from this law.

Later that evening, Saito returned home and saw the concern in Tokio’s eyes.  She saw the bruises and dried blood on his face and side of his mouth.  He smiled at her and he laid his broken sword down on the ground.

“Did you win,” she asked resting her head on his chest.

“It was a draw,” Saito said with a smirk,” but the next time I face the Battousai…I will defeat him.”

“The Battousai…he was your opponent,” Tokio said.

“Yes…he was the one I was supposed to test…he was my prey for this evening,” Saito said as he rested his head on hers.

            “Prey,” Tokio said.

            “Yeah…why,” Saito said.

“I remember now, you called me your prey the other night,” Tokio said with a frown.

            “I did,” Saito said.

“What did you mean by calling me prey,” Tokio said with a smirk.

“Uh…can’t we just drop that…it doesn’t ring a bell,” Saito said.

“Is that so,” Tokio said sarcastically.

‘So…what will you do now…Battousai,’ Saito thought to himself and he continued to hug Tokio

***

May 14th…Lord Okubo was murdered…the papers state that he was killed by descendents of Ishikawa samurai…but Saito and the Battousai knew that Shishio Makoto was really involved…there was only one decision for them…they would have travel to Kyoto to finish this.  Saito would have to say good-bye to Tokio…just for the time being.

            “Your going then,” Tokio said.

“Yes,” Saito said,” but I will return…that is a promise.”

“Here,” Tokio said as she held out one of her sai,” take this with you.”

Saito smiled as he took the sai and tucked it into his belt,” I’ll keep it for luck.”

Tokio smiled as the tears ran down her face then rushed toward him and wrapped her arms around him and he did the same then their lips met for one passionate kiss.  He then parted and with a sigh walked out.

            “Saito,” she called out.

He turned toward her and saw that she was smiling.

“Please win this battle for me,” she said.

Saito smiled and said,” I will…good-bye Tokio…I will return shortly.”

He then walked away…he was to meet up with the Battousai later that evening…they would be allies in this battle against Shishio, but once it was over they would go back to being arch rivals.

‘Wait for me Tokio,’ he thought with a smirk on his face.
