Aoshi is the "leader" of an elite group of ninjas called "The Oniwaban Group". He was so skillful that he became the protector of the Edo Castle at the age of 15.

After the revolution, Aoshi and four other members of the Oniwaban began working for the shady businessman, Kanryu Takeda. It was during that time that he had his first battle with Kenshin. A battle which resulted in defeat. So obsessed with being the strongest, Aoshi vowed to fight Kenshin again one day. It wasn't until the Kyoto Arc episodes did that day take place....(I won't spoil it by giving away the outcome...)

Aoshi is always quite serious and seems devoid of human emotion. One of the few times he shows a sensitive side is right after he buries his fallen comrades (killed by Kanryu). Aoshi vowed to return someday and place flowers on their graves.

Some other characteristics include his preference for tea (his body has no tolerance for alcohol) and long hours of meditation.......wouldn't you just love to know what he's thinking???
