Kenshin a.k.a Shinta (Birth name) suffered many hardships beginning from the time of his youth. His father was an excellent farmer but succumbed to cholera as did his mother. Shortly afterwards, the boy was sold to slave traders, all of which were slaughtered by a murderous gang of thugs. Shinta would have been killed as well if a muscular man by the name of Seijuro Hiko hadn't arrived just in time to save him. Seijuro eventually became the boy's "Master". He changed his pupil's name to Kenshin as Shinta was too soft for a swordsman.

Hiko put Kenshin through rigorous training teaching the sword technique of "Hiten Misurugi Ryuu". As time wore on and political unrest intensified, Kenshin grew restless. Against his Master's wishes, Kenshin left with the hope of protecting the innocent. Soon he became an assassin for the Choshu Clan and killed many of the Shogunate political leaders. He became known as Battousai the Manslayer.

A heartbreaking tragedy (See Samurai X OVA info) prompted Kenshin to vow, "After the Meiji Revolution, I will stop the killing." When the Revolution ended, Kenshin held true to his pledge and disappeared. Nobody knew of his whereabouts until he appeared 10 years later in Tokyo. There, he met Miss Kaoru and ended his wandering days....or did he? Unfortunately, the struggles of the new government will always be there to haunt him. Now the once Battousai uses a Sakabatou (reverse blade sword) because "to kill" is NOT an option.
