If I were to describe this last episode of Rurouni Kenshin in one word, it would be surreal. It involves no crime, confrontations, or chaos...it simply shows a day in the life of the Kenshin-gumi. Here is what happens:

It is Meiji Year11 (1878). Ms. Kaoru gazes out of the dojo thinking how it's been over six months since Kenshin first arrived. Today the two of them will take a small boat to a cemetery. Prior to showing Ms. Kaoru praying at what may be her parent's gravesite, the episode flashes CG images of scenic Japan. All the while a pretty tune is playing in the background. Afterwards, the two visit the beach.

At the same time, Sano is getting his bandages changed by Ms. Megumi. He asks the pretty doctor to join him for lunch. She hesitates at first but finally agrees. Little did Sano know that she would put him to work at hard labor in order to pay for that food. After working up a sweat, Sano settles into a relaxing bath. Ms. Megumi leaves him one of Dr. Gensai's yukatas while she disposes of his reeking "bad" attire. However, turns out that she just washed the clothing, but it was a good joke to pull on the whimpering Sanosuke.

Not far away Yahiko is helping out at the Akabeko. Tae is making cute remarks about Tsubame and Yahiko when the weather suddenly turns stormy. She worries about Kenshin and Ms. Kaoru, but Yahiko insists they can take care of themselves.

Due to the weather Kenshin and Ms. Kaoru find an Inn, but they must share a room. After some embarrassment while changing, the two nestle into their beds. Not long after, Ms. Kaoru turns to see Kenshin's sleeping face and slowly rests her hand on his. More music plays as the episode spans the sleeping faces of most of the Kenshin characters.

Amidst all the calmness, Ms. Kaoru has a dream that Kenshin is leaving. When she awakens, Kenshin is gone and all of his bedding is neatly folded nearby. A terrified Ms. Kaoru runs onto the beach to find Kenshin dreamily staring at the sunrise. She rests her head on him in relief. Not long after he hands her a beautiful pink shell, and they hold hands. More music plays as numerous scenes from the Kenshin series are recapped. Finally, Kenshin and Ms. Kaoru's boat returns as the rest of the Kenshin crew watch their safe return.....
