A Wish Unrequited

Probably one the most heart wrenching episodes of this awesome anime.

A week has passed since visited by the Meiji Government's Secretary of the Interior, Okubo Toshimichi. Though everyone tries to talk him out of it, Kenshin journeys to Kiyoi Saka in order to reveal his decision.

At the same time a horrifying event is taking place. One of Shishio's young henchmen (Soujiro) enters the carriage and murders Okubo. News of the assassination spreads quickly. Another group (Shimada Ichiro) is claiming responsibility, but Kawaji knows the truth, and he conveys that information to Saitou and Kenshin.

Due to Okubo's death, Kenshin is now struggling with his conscience. Should he remain a wanderer determined never to kill, or must he draw his sword once again in order to prevent the evil Shishio from crumbling everything that they fought so hard for?

In the beauty of the evening's twilight, Kenshin tells Kaoru his decision. Kaoru's glistening tears sparkle with the light of the fireflies as Kenshin leaves for Kyoto.....he has become a wanderer once more.
