Heizo Ogawa once embarked on a training journey trying to become a swordsman. Unfortunately, it was not his forte, and he was unable to get any better. He turned to selling toad oil.

On his journey, he had met many orphaned children, but didn't have the money to raise them. With no where else to turn, Ogawa thought to use the name "Battousai the Manslayer." Using the name allowed him to collect money in return for his protection. That worked well, because most are so fearful of the Battousai that no one would draw a sword against him.
