Handsome Katsu was first introduced to the series during episode 23 using the name Tsunan. Turns out he was a childhood friend of Sano's until they lost touch...each believing the other was dead. The two were devoted children followers of the ill-fated Sekihoutai and it's Captain Sagara. Similar to Sano, Katsu spent the past ten years unhappy and hating the people who tarnished the name of the Sekihoutai.

In addition to drawing beautiful artwork, Katsu's life's work included producing bombs. (Seems he gained a good deal of knowledge handling gunpowder.) His plan was to crush the Imperialist government and make the new Era that Captain Sagara was fighting for...a reality. The first target would be the Internal Affairs building and then other departments. As a dedicated Sekihoutai, Sano agreed to help. Lucky for everyone, Kenshin stopped this disaster from happening.

After the confrontation with Kenshin, Katsu quit his lucrative artist work to begin printing his own newspaper with intentions of correcting all of the evils of the Meiji Government. He isn't seen all that much until episodes 90 through 94 where he's a pivotal character in the Feng Shui saga.
