Act 3: The Previous Night at the Mountain Home

Kenshin and Tomoe go into town to purchase supplies. That evening at dinner Kenshin suggests that they plant some crops. He tells Tomoe how his father was an exceptional farmer. Hearing this, Tomoe begins to see Kenshin, not as a ruthless killer, but as the gentle man he was meant to be.

The next day Kenshin and Tomoe are working the fields when Iizuka arrives. He tells Kenshin things have gone from bad to worse....the Shogunate is in complete control of the government now, and they're purging all of the radicals. He continues saying the conservative factions of the Choshu Clan are forcing members of their rebellion to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) daily all to put on a good face for the new rulers. Also, it seems that Katsura has disappeared. Before leaving Iizuka gives Kenshin money and supplies to sell medicines as a visible source of income. The older man adds, "Just to play it safe, don't go back to Kyoto. Wait here until the rebellion is renewed."

The next morning Tomoe and Kenshin go into town to sell medicine. Before leaving Tomoe again looks at her dagger, but this time she places it in a drawer no longer finding the need to carry it. On their route home Kenshin surprises Tomoe by saying she didn't take her dagger. She replies saying "her husband is an apothecary not an assassin." That evening Tomoe affectionately covers Kenshin who is sleeping upright holding his sword.

As the days pass, Iizuka visits often. Tomoe doesn't like him at all. After one visit Iizuka leaves thinking Kenshin is weakening. Not long after, Iizuka meets with a prominent member of the Shogunate. They think Kenshin has become soft and want him dead. Outside a would-be spy is caught and brutally slaughtered. Inside a young boy emerges and is told he can finally visit his sister. That boy is Enishi, Tomoe's little brother.

The next day Enishi surprises his sister at the mountain home. While Kenshin is not around the youth tells Tomoe how the Shogunate have arranged to have Kenshin killed. She orders him to return to Edo and do not come back. He angrily disagrees and leaves but not before saying,
"The demon's fate is sealed...you cannot stop it."

Their crop turned out much better than was once thought. Tomoe prepared a lovely meal during which Kenshin admitted how he found inner peace creating the crop with Tomoe. He said she gave him the answers he was looking for. That's when Tomoe opened up telling Kenshin of her family and her past. Seems her father works for the Shogunate, but not an important position. Her mother died giving birth to Enishi. She continued by telling Kenshin how she was engaged. Her fiancé was a skilled swordsman who was killed during a body guard assignment. He was butchered right in the street. That's why she left Edo. There were too many memories.

Not far away, Iizuka reassures Enishi that soon he can return to Edo with his sister. Then he thinks to himself, "I must be a fool to play with fire like this...at least I'll be a rich fool."

Kenshin and Tomoe are returning from a trip to the village once again. It's bitter cold and snowing. Tomoe trips and falls. Kenshin offers his hand saying, "I will protect my wife." Her thoughts echo everything she has written in her diary: She was bent on revenge. Her heart has changed like the seasons just as he has changed from an assassin to a husband. At home, the two find comfort in one another and embrace. Kenshin tells Tomoe his plans for the future....once the old order is destroyed and dark days are ended, he wants to find a way to better humanity without the use of his sword and atone for all his wrongs. He then asks Tomoe, "Will you marry me...really?" She smiles and answers, "yes."

Tomoe prepares to leave early the next morning. Before going, she looks at Kenshin sleeping soundly and thinks, ""You once destroyed my only happiness, but now you've given me a new hope. Goodbye, Kenshin, I wish to save your life and save mine as well."

Kenshin awakens to find Tomoe missing. Iizuka is at the door and tells him,
"Tomoe is the traitor. She's meeting with the conspirators right now not far from here."
Kenshin finds it hard to believe, but the older man tells him to read her diary as proof of her deception. While Kenshin reads, his scar begins to bleed once again.
