Shougo Muto (his birth name) was born within a Christian family. As a boy, he watched helplessly as his parents were persecuted and murdered for their beliefs. Luckily, his uncle Hyoue arrived in time to rescue the children from a similar fate. From that day forward, Shougo vowed that he would become a God and seek revenge for the thousands of oppressed Christians. He changed his name and declared himself the re-incarnation of Shiro Amakusa, the child of God.

While living with his uncle, Shougo trained and mastered the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu. He actually surpassed his Uncle by learning the Amakekeru Ryu No Hirameki with a God-like speed. You see Uncle Hyoue preceded Seijuro Hiko XIII as a student of the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu, however, he failed in his attempt at the Amakekeru Ryu No Hirameki and was thought to have fallen to a watery grave. That was not the case.

When Shougo and his uncle had a disagreement, the younger man rendered the elder man blind by using a technique of the Rai Ryu Sen, whereby he uses lightning reflecting from his sword to put his opponent into eternal darkness. This technique was used against Kenshin as well.

It had been about a year since Shougo arrived in Shimabara. In that time he gathered Christians and trained them as soldiers. In addition, he built hospitals and orphanages and even created his own medicine. The Christian villagers believed he performed miracles, but truth be told, Shougo had a vast knowledge of Western medicine and astronomy that he gained in his world travels.
