Tokyo Mew True
by Faunamon
Note: Hey! New fic, comin’ at ya! And I hope to make it great! :D I hop I can sort of match Mia’s personality as a child, as well as the others’, too! Oh, and plus, I’ll have Mia move to Tokyo, which makes her a little happy since she gets to be with the other Mews. And later, Mako will move, too. I know that didn’t happen to Mia in real life, but this is fanfiction. Please, help me out out there if you can! By the way, in my story (America Mew Mew) I’m a fox Mew Mew, but just to clear this up: in real life I would be part rusty spotted cat, my weapon would be the Starbright Rose (a rose wand), and my attack would be Ribbon Starbright Check. But, yeah, I only WISH I could be a Mew Mew. What, it would be fun! I just wanted to let you know, I think I’m more compatible with a cat!
~ Nyaa! :D
Chapter 1: A Mew Star is Born
It’s Japan, about twenty or thirty years ago, and a young girl with kind of short, black hair is seen standing at the door to a museum. Nearby is a large pink café, and seagulls are gathered around the city of Tokyo, doing seagull things.
“Why did I decide to spend today, of all days, stuck inside a boring museum?” the girl asked herself.
“Mia! Mia! Mia Ikumi, come HERE!”
“Coming, Mako,” the girl sighed. Her name was Mia, and she was 15 years old. She loved animals of all kinds, so had made arrangements with her best friend, Mako Kinamoto, to go to see some red data animals, or endangered species. She (like Fauna-chan :D) was very interested in endangered animals. “I thought we would be going to a ZOO or something, not HERE,” she muttered, entering the museum and walking over to where Mako stood.
“Isn’t this awesome?” Mako asked, pointing to a picture of a cat. There was an actual specimen in a glass cage, but for some reason, Mako seemed more fascinated by the drawing. “It’s called an Iberian lynx.”
Mia looked at the real cat and gasped when she saw how beautiful it was. It had a deep blue-grey coat, tufted ears, and a beautiful face. It also had spots like a leopard’s, and they were what captivated Mia the most. She felt she could almost melt into them, become one with the cat.
“And this is the golden hamster!” she heard Mako exclaim from behind her.
She reluctantly turned from the cat to stare into the face of the white-and-gold hamster Mako was holding out to her. She sweated a bit and asked Mako, “Are you sure we’re allowed to actually touch them?”
Mako laughed. “Sure, I’m sure!” she said, winking. “Now, let’s go!” Mako practically dragged Mia towards another exhibit. Once again, she stared at the drawing in wonder, leaving Mia to discover the name of the animal for herself.
“Red panda,” Mia read, looking into the eyes of the strange animal before her. It was called a panda, yes, but looked a lot more like a rust red raccoon. “Also known as the bear cat or firefox.” She stared at it for a bit before asking herself, “But it sure doesn’t look like a panda, a fox, or a cat, so why’s it called that?”
“Check this out!” Mako exclaimed, and with a sigh, Mia ran over to her. “It’s a Hawaiian crow!”
Mia stared at the bird in disbelief. It was much more beautiful than she’d expected from a crow, of all things. It had sleek, jet-black feathers, long legs, and a red-tipped beak. It spread its wings out, and it looked even more beautiful. But it still didn’t compare with the Iberian lynx she’d seen earlier…
Suddenly, a display caught Mia’s attention, and she wandered off towards it. It had a large house with several squirrels leaping around inside. Small and gray, they looked truly playful and happy. Reading the description on their cage, Mia saw that they were called Delmarva fox squirrels.
Mako ran up to her, looked the squirrels over, and announced that after a good meal, she was ready to go home, so the two girls headed off to the next-door café. It was called the Espresso ~Nyaa~ Café, and was currently the place to be if you were anybody, according to the news. Mia didn’t know about that, but she loved the food.
Entering the café, sitting down, and ordering their usual, Mia and Mako talked a little about the animals they had just seen. Suddenly, Mia remembered something very important that had happened inside the museum.
“Mako… that Iberian lynx… I… I felt like I could just… melt right into it. You know, sort of become the lynx… Did something like that happen to you?”
Mako looked at her as if she’d suggested they skydive off Mount Fuji. “No, not at all,” she replied.
Soon, their food arrived. Mia noted that there were no real waitresses, and that the same man was brining food to everyone, dealing with insults, shouts to hurry up, and more. “Poor guy,” she whispered, after telling Mako her feelings.
“I heard he’s also the manager,” Mako told her. “His name’s… something weird, like… I think it’s Karuko Avalon. I hear his father was American, which is why some people treat him badly. Plus, he’s only seventeen. Some people don’t think he’s cut out to run a café.”
Looking over at Karuko, she saw how much he tried to keep himself happy, to not listen to anything the others said. He did look American with short blonde hair and bright green eyes. He dressed a little differently from everyone else, too. As Karuko walked away from the main café area, she couldn’t help but feel sorry for him.
Mia stood up and made a fist. “That isn’t fair!” she shouted, followed by a sweatdrop from Mako. “I’m going to find him and tell him I appreciate his hard work!”
She then got up and ran after Karuko, not listening to Mako’s shouts of “Mia! Mia!” it was only when she had followed Karuko through a door (labeled ‘employees only’) that she realized she had no idea where she was going.
“Gotta follow Karuko,” she muttered, running blindly after the café manager. She ran up a flight of stairs, into a large room, and straight into some kind of… machine shaped like a flying cat.
“No!” a voice called out, and another gasped. And after that, everything around Mia went black.
When she regained consciousness, Mia saw that she was no longer in the café. Espresso ~Nyaa~ had never been a glowing black space filled with green orbs of light, as far as she could tell.
“Huh?” she asked herself, and her voice echoed softly. “What’s that light? It’s glowing brighter than all the others…”
Out of one of the green orbs surrounding her came a…
“Cat!”
The blue-gray cat floated into her arms, and suddenly calm, Mia smiled at it. The cat smiled back, much to her surprise, and then did something she didn’t expect.
It jumped into her chest.
Strangely… Mia thought, This feels warm… comforting… I should be terrified, but… I’m not scared at all…
Suddenly, Mia’s body began glowing. Out of it came tufted ears and a long tail, complete with a bell and red ribbon. A dress of some sort seemed to form on her body, and a choker and garter magically appeared on her neck and thigh.
When Mia stopped glowing, she felt her head. Ears? She looked behind her. Tail? She looked down at herself to see that she had a pink dress of some sort, but it was strangely puffy (not as puffy as Ichigo’s) and lined with red fur. She was wearing a pink choker and garter lined with similar fur, except the garter had a small red ribbon tied around it. She also had pink boots and gloves that looked like Berry’s, but they had red ribbons tied around them, too, like the garter. Is this a costume?
What?
What’s going on?
Mia collapsed onto the ground and looked down at herself once more to make sure this was really happening, ad saw that she was back in Espresso ~Nyaa~. She looked up in surprise to see Karuko and another boy a little closer to her age (maybe 16) standing in front of her.
The boy she didn’t recognize had light brown hair and even lighter blue eyes, suggesting he was maybe American, too. He was the first to speak. “I didn’t think it was ever going to work,” he said simply.
“Let me explain,” Karuko offered. “My name is Karuko Avalon. And this is my brother, Yuna. We’ve been working on the Mew Project for years.”
Mew Project?
“We’ve been trying to introduce animal genes into humans,” Karuko went on. “We weren’t sure it was ever going to work, but you… You proved that it could. We’ll inject four more compatible girls with the rest of our DNA later. Until now, we’ve had a lot of failed experiments, like…”
“Enough about that, Karuko,” Yuna cut in. “You are a Tokyo Mew Mew now – a superhero. What’s your name?”
“M-Mia,” Mia replied, her voice shaking. She herself was quivering uncontrollably. “Mia Ikumi.”
“Well, Mia, you are the first girl to be compatible with Iberian lynx DNA that we could find. You may be the only one on this planet.”
“But, I can’t be a TOKYO Mew Mew… I live in Osaka…”
“Well, it doesn’t matter. Just pretend you live in Tokyo, and we’ll probably get through this. As you may know, Iberian lynxes are critically endangered. That’s why we needed its DNA. Endangered animals have a strong will to preserve their species, so…”
Karuko looked right at her and interrupted his brother. “We needed a girl with the DNA of an endangered species to fight the aliens.”
With that, Mia promptly fainted.
“I think it’s better… she remembers this as a dream,” Yuna said, clutching the pendant on Mia’s collar until she turned back to normal. “If she asks anything about the Mew Project, or what she’s doing here, we’ll just tell her she walked into a room filled with flowers and fell asleep due to the pollen after she followed you up here. I’ll give her my robot, R2001.” He attached a small robot in the shape of a heart with wings onto Mia’s hat.
Karuko just stared at Mia for a few seconds, then finally turned to his brother. “If Mia really is supposed to be a Mew Mew, don’t you think she’ll find out on her own?”
Yuna didn’t reply, but simply looked down at Mia’s sleeping face.
Mia raced to school, her heart pounding. She could suddenly run a lot faster, but didn’t think about that. Instead, she remembered the strange dream she’d had. She didn’t remember walking into a room filled with flowers, or anything else like that. She just remembered becoming a Mew Mew, and Karuko and Yuna. She had a feeling the dream had been brought by memories of the lynx, and how she’d felt she could merge with it. In her dream, she actually had.
“Mia!” she heard Mako call out to her, and she ran over to her friend. “What happened in Espresso ~Nyaa~? I wanted to follow you, but I was scared… What happened, Mia? Were you caught?”
“I-I fell asleep,” Mia replied quietly. “I walked into a room filled with flowers and fell asleep, and then I had this weird dream about the Iberian lynx we saw. I was caught, but Karuko and his brother weren’t mad at me. They took me to another room and woke me up.”
“One more thing.”
“What?”
“Where’d you get that cool key chain?” Mako asked, pointing to her hat. Mia reached up and pulled something off the ribbon that was tied around her hat. Bringing it down in front of her face, she saw that it was a white, smiling, and heart-shaped key chain with little pink wings and pink cat ears.
“You know, Mako, I don’t even remember getting this key chain,” she replied. “Maybe it was a gift from Karuko and Yuna, and they left me to find it for myself.”
“Maybe,” Mako agreed. “They say some strange things happen at that café, so I wouldn’t be surprised. By the way, great news. We get to start out with gym class today.”
“Oh, joy,” Mia replied. “Why now? Just let me go change.”
Mia hurried into the bathroom, changed into her gym clothes, and hurried outside to stand with Mako. She gasped when she saw how high the bar they had to jump over was, and suddenly felt very dizzy.
“Miss Ikumi, you’re up,” the coach called.
Mia gulped and took a running start towards the bar. She jumped, and to her surprise, made it!
Well, almost.
Her foot actually got caught on the bar as she was sailing over it, and stumbled through the air. “Oh, no! Mia!” she heard Mako call. But suddenly, something happened. She flipped over one, two, three times, and gracefully landed on her feet, toes first, one foot at a time.
“Wow!” everyone started exclaiming. “Mia, how’d you do that?” “You’ve GOT to show me again!” “You know, Mia, there’s a spot open n the gymnastics team!”
“Nyaa!” Mia exclaimed, although she wasn’t sure why.
Suddenly, the field was very quiet, and everyone looked at Mia.
“Nyaa is the new cool thing to say,” she improvised.
“Okay!” someone shouted, and everyone immediately started saying, “Nyaa!”
After gym class was over, kids were still saying “Nyaa” constantly, mostly the girls. Mia couldn’t believe that had actually worked. She headed towards the changing room, which she’d had no time to use beforehand, but on the way, she glanced over her shoulder and happened to see the koi pond.
Mia immediately turned around and headed towards the pond. She dunked her head inside and came up with a live fish in her mouth. It took her a while to realize what she’d just done, and she spit it out, saying, “Yuck! That was so gross!” She ran into the dressing room and stayed there for most of the day.
After school, Mako and Mia walked home together, and Mia explained what had happened and why she’d been in the changing room so long. “I told the teacher I was sick when she came looking for me,” she said, “but I was just so freaked out…”
“Well, don’t sweat it,” Mako told her. “Hey, why don’t you come over to my house?”
“Okay,” Mia agreed, and she went with Mako to her home. The girls were next-door neighbors, so they could visit each other any time they wanted.
As the two girls walked inside, Mako’s little brother, Onpo, stopped them short.
“Don’t go in there!” Onpo begged, his eyes full of tears. “There’s something weird in your room, Mako!”
“Yeah, right. Nice try, squirt,” Mako replied, and she and Mia pushed past him and continued on to her room.
“No!” Onpo howled, crying even more, but the girls just ignored him.
Mako turned the doorknob, opened her door to her room, and screamed. The girls immediately saw that Onpo had been telling the truth. Something that looked like a rhinoceros made of steel was destroying Mako’s room!
“Let’s split up!” Mako cried over the rhino’s roar. “He won’t be able to catch us then! I’ll go with Onpo into the park, you run the other way!”
“Right!” Mia agreed, trying to act calm even though she was very scared. She ran to the forest, which was very far away from the park, but to her dismay, the rhino chased after Mako and Onpo. “No, no…” she whispered.
“Mia! Transform!”
“Who-who’s there?” Mia asked, looking around. Suddenly, Yuna dropped out of a tree!
“Mia! It wasn’t a dream, and you really are a Tokyo Mew Mew! Now! Transform!”
‘But… I don’t know how…”
“Try it!” Yuna yelled.
“Mew Mew Mia, Metamorphosis!”
Mia suddenly sprouted cat ears and a tail, and they were followed by the ribbon and bell. Then, Mia was covered by the costume she’d worn in her dream… no, in the café. It was real.
“I thought I could hide this form from you,” Yuna told her, “but I can’t. We need you to fight the aliens, Mew Mew! Now, go save your friend!”
Mia nodded and raced away, covering the distance in record time thanks to her cat DNA. She was very scared, but she tried not to let it show.
When Mia reached the park, she quickly jumped into a tree, then down onto the back of the rhino. She slid down and flipped backwards into a tree, then called, “Hey! You pick on innocent kids, you get the special of the day: To face Mew Mia!”
Mako and Onpo looked up at her in wonder. “Is that Mia?” asked Onpo.
“No,” Mako replied. “That girl has ears and a tail. There are plenty of people named Mia, Onpo. Even some Americans have that name.”
“Oh.”
Suddenly, the key chain that Mia had found on her hat appeared behind her. She whirled to face it, and found that it was bigger, flying, and completely alive. “Get down,” she hissed. “I don’t want Mako to see you!”
“Right,” the key chain whispered back. “By the way, I am R2001, your trusty robot sidekick!”
“What? No way! I’m naming you Vicha, if you don’t mind.”
“Not at all,” Vicha replied, floating away. “See ya later, Mew Mia.”
“What’s going on up there?” Mako called up to Mia.
“Nothing,” she replied with a sweatdrop. ‘Now, uh, what do I do?” she added to herself.
The rhino charged at the tree she was in and shook her to the ground, raised his great foot, and was about to stomp her into a pancake when suddenly, words came into her head and she yelled them out.
“Cherrybell!” suddenly, a strange bell shaped like a trio of hearts or cherries appeared in her hands. It, like her costume, was pink, with a red ribbon at the top.
“Ribbon Cherry Check!” she called, and a blast of red light shot out at the monster rhino. It changed into a regular rhino, one she recognized from a nearby game preserve, and a jellyfish-like thing came out of it. “Well, I have to go! See you later!” she called, and she jumped away. When she tried to jump into a tree a little ways away, someone grabbed her wrist, freezing her in place, and a sweatdrop formed on her head.
“Relax, Mew Mia. It’s me, Yuna. Follow me back to Espresso ~Nyaa~, and don’t worry, it’s closed.”
Another sweatdrop appeared on Mia’s head as Yuna literally dragged her into a car, her body still frozen in a jumping position.
This was turning out to be a very weird day.
To be continued…
Well, that was the first episode of Tokyo Mew True! Hope you liked!
