1. How Many Miles to the Battlefield?

Young, impressionable, Al Izuruha, dreams of one day becoming a soldier. He is envious of his friend, who acquired a badge from his brother in the military. When Al is told to meet his father at the space port, the youngster brings along a camera in hopes of getting a picture of a true Gundam. Little does he know….a Federation base has just been attacked on Earth and additional attacks are about to occur.

While at school the next day, Mobile suits attack the colony. Al and his friends barely escape death when one of the damaged mecha comes crashing down in the woods nearby. Being young and inquisitive, Al goes to investigate with his camera. He finds the Gundam, but also a young Zeon soldier and the guy is pointing a gun straight at his head…

NOTE: This anime had a depressing and ironic conclusion that effected me for weeks after watching it. Guess that's when you really know just how good it is!
