Inuyasha: The Spirit Within
By: Guardian Angel
Chapter Ten
Kagome woke up to the chill of the cold and drumming of the rain. She got up out of bed and looked out the window which had fogged up. She wiped some of it away to see the sky totally dark. She shrugged and was going to go back to bed when she heard groaning. She followed the noise to find that it was coming from Inuyasha. He had sweat going down his face. “Inuyasha, what’s wrong?”
“Kagome,” Inuyasha muttered.
“Yeah,” Kagome said putting his hand in hers.
“Naraku, you can’t, I won’t let you.”
“Let him what?”
Inuyasha’s hand gripped Kagome’s. It tightened.
“Inuyasha, wake up. It’s just a nightmare,” Kagome said.
Inuyasha sat up when he woke up and yelled out Kagome’s name. He let out a sigh when he realized it had all been a dream. He was about to go back to sleep, but felt someone’s hand holding his. He looked down to see Kagome. She sneezed.
He lifted her onto the bed. “You know, I’m starting to think you really are getting sick.”
“Inuyasha, I’m-ah-ah-ah-ah-achoo!” She groaned. “Okay, so maybe I am, but-“
Inuyasha took his red shirt off and put it on her. He then covered her with the blanket and lied back down with his back to her and closed his eyes. Kagome lied down with her back to him and closed her eyes. She then felt an arm go around her waist. Kagome moved her hand towards Inuyasha’s. They held each other’s hands.
Kagome opened her eyes. “Inuyasha, you don’t have to worry about Naraku capturing me because he doesn’t know about you and me.”
“I know, it’s just, I don’t want to lose you like I did Kikyo,” Inuyasha said. He rested his head on Kagome’s shoulder.
“And you won’t,” Kagome said. “I made a promise and that promise was to not leave you.”
“Yeah, but there’s also that Ryouken guy. I don’t want to end up like him,” Inuyasha said.
“You won’t,” Kagome said. She sneezed again. Inuyasha drew her closer to him and fell asleep. Kagome did, too.
While this was all happening, Sango and the others were pretending to be asleep and were peeking. They had seen the whole thing.
The next day…
Kagome and the others took their seats.
“Leon, tell me, what do you think about Inuyasha’s opponent?” Miroku asked as Inuyasha and Jentaro entered the arena.
“I can tell you that either that guy is an idiot for using a long range weapon against a close range weapon or has some tricks up his sleeves. And, as you can see, he loves girls,” Leon said. He then slightly smiled. “But, then again, a certain someone I know use to love every girl he came across.”
“Hey! That was then this is now,” Miroku said.
Sango went over to Kagome. “I’m glad he’s finally admitted his feelings to you and you to him. We’ve both got our guys now.”
“Yeah, I guess,” Kagome said. She sneezed. She then groaned and sneezed two more times.
“Kagome, maybe you should go home,” Sango said.
“I can’t,” Kagome said. “I don’t want to hurt or disappoint Inuyasha when he finds me gone.”
“I’ll explain why you’re gone,” Sango said.
“Okay,” Kagome said. “Can I borrow Kirara?”
“Come on, Pain, Rikku, Yuna, you girls can beat him,” Sota said. He was playing Final Fantasy X-II.
The phone started ringing.
“Mom, phone!” Sota yelled.
“Sota, can you get it?” his mom asked. “I’m busy.”
Sota frowned. “Grandpa, phone!”
“Sota, I am busy trying to rid of this troublesome storm,” his grandpa said.
“Grandpa, you can’t stop the rain because no one can control the weather,” Sota muttered. He groaned, paused the game, got up, and picked up the phone. “Hello?”
“Hey, Sota. Is Kagome home?” the person on the phone said.
“Oh, hi Hojo. Kagome isn’t home right now. She’s off with way cool Inuyasha in the feudal era fighting evil and all that other cool stuff super heroes get to do,” Sota said.
“Huh?” Hojo asked. “Inuyasha? Feudal era? Fighting evil? Super heroes? Sota, you’ve been playing with way too many video games.”
Sota let out a sigh of relief. “Yeah, I guess so. What I meant was Kagome is with our way cool cousin from China. And they’re at the feudal era fair where they pretend to fight evil and get to pretend to be super heroes.”
“Oh. Well, tell her I-“
The door then opened and Kagome entered the house. “Mom, Grandpa, I’m home.”
“Hojo, she just walked in, so you can talk to her now,” Sota said.
“You’re playing a video game, aren’t you?” Hojo asked.
“Yeah,” Sota said. “Kagome, phone.”
Kagome entered the room.
Sota handed her the phone. “It’s Hojo. You know, your boyfriend.”
Kagome grabbed the phone from him. “He’s not my boyfriend.”
“Whatever,” Sota said and left.
“Brat,” Kagome muttered. “Hello?”
“Hey, Kagome. Do you want to
go on a walk with me?” Hojo asked. “You can bring your cousin, Inuyasha, with
you.”
“A walk? In this type of weather?” Kagome asked.
Cousin? Inuyasha? Oh, I’m going to hurt Sota.
“Don’t worry. We’ll walk to my house. I’m not crazy,” Hojo said. “I don’t want to make you sick.”
I’m already sick. “Uh, yeah, sure, I guess.”
“Great, I’ll be there soon.” He hung up.
Kagome did, too. She turned to go to her room, but Sota stood in her way.
“So, which one are you going to pick as your boyfriend?” Sota asked.
“You brat, go play with your video game,” Kagome said.
“You mean she left my match?!” Inuyasha demanded.
“She’s getting sick,” Sango said.
“Why don’t you go check on her?” Miroku asked.
“Yeah, why don’t you check on your woman?” Koga asked.
Inuyasha blushed and looked away. “She’s not my woman.”
“Sure,” Shippo said.
“Feh! Fine. I’ll go check on her, but not because she’s my woman as Koga and Shippo say. I’m only doing it so you guys will leave me alone.” With that, he left.
“Two words,” Shippo said. “Um, make that three. He’s in denial.”
The doorbell rang. Kagome ran down the stairs. She opened the door to see Hojo. “Hey.”
“Hi, Kagome,” Hojo said. “I bought these flowers for you.” He handed them to her.
“Oh, um, thanks. They’re pretty,” Kagome said.
“What’s pretty?” a voice asked.
Kagome turned around to see Inuyasha. “What are you doing here?”
“What? A guy can’t check on you when you’re sick,” Inuyasha said.
“Well, I’m okay. So, uh, go hang out with Sota or something,” Kagome said.
“Why?” Inuyasha then spotted the flowers. “Who gave you those?” He looked towards the door to see Hojo. “Oh, your boyfriend. Well, then I’ll meet you in your room, I guess.” He ran upstairs.
“No, Inuyasha, it’s not like that,” Kagome said. She put the flowers on the table and after telling Hojo she was sorry about Inuyasha’s rudeness, she ran up to her room. She saw Inuyasha looking out the window with his arms crossed. She went over to him. “What was that all about?”
“Nothing,” Inuyasha said.
Kagome gasped. “You’re jealous.”
“What?!” Inuyasha turned to face her in anger. He was blushing. “I’m not jealous of anything!”
Kagome put her hands on his arms, rested her head against his shoulder, and closed her eyes. “Don’t worry, Inuyasha. You don’t have to be jealous because there’s no one else I love, but you. Besides, you can come, you know. Just put on that clothes I bought you the last time you came.”
Inuyasha looked towards her and smiled. “Okay, I’ll do that.”
“Have you found out who Inuyasha is going against next?” Miroku asked.
“No. All I know is that his match starts in three hours,” Leon said.
Hojo turned on the TV. and sat down beside Kagome. He, Kagome, and Inuyasha were at his house.
“So, which movie are we going to watch again?” Kagome asked.
“The Ring,” Hojo said. “I heard it’s really good.”
“Oh,” Kagome said. I heard it was scary.
Inuyasha frowned. “The Ring? What kind of name is that?”
“Shhh, the movie is starting,” Kagome said.
The three enjoyed the movie. Towards the ending, when the girl came out of the TV. , Kagome had freaked out and was hugging Inuyasha out of fright. Inuyasha had thought the movie was lame and boring, though, he hadn’t minded Kagome hugging him. Hojo didn’t really care that Kagome hugged Inuyasha. He just wished it was him.
Inuyasha got up and turned towards the TV. “Kagome.”
“Yeah?” Kagome asked.
“I think I see-“ He gasped and began choking.
“Inuyasha!” Kagome cried.
Inuyasha fell to the ground with his eyes closed.
Kagome ran to his side. “Oh, my gosh. Hojo, he’s not breathing.”
“Okay. You check for a pulse and I’ll get Mom,” Hojo said. He left.
Kagome checked for a pulse and found he had one. She let out a sigh of relief. At least he had a pulse. She got up to get Hojo, but felt someone grab her hand. She turned around to see two big red eyes. She screamed and turned around to run, but felt two hands grab her arm to stop her. The hands turned her around. Instead of two red eyes in front of her, she saw Inuyasha. “Wha-what happened to-to-“
“The red eyes?” Inuyasha asked. He reached into his pocket and pulled out red contact lenses. “I got ‘em from your brother.”
“But-but you weren’t breathing,” Kagome said.
“I held my breath.”
“And you were choking and-“
“I was pretending.”
Kagome looked at him angrily. “You scared me to death!”
Inuyasha started laughing.
“Inuyasha, you jerk! It’s not funny.” Tears went down her cheeks. “I thought I was really losing you.”
Inuyasha stopped laughing and hugged Kagome. She hugged him back.
“Kagome, you won’t lose me,” Inuyasha said. He began stroking her hair. “I won’t allow you to feel that pain.”
Kagome stopped crying. “Yeah, I guess. Inuyasha?”
“Yeah?” Inuyasha asked.
“Please, don’t ever do that again,” Kagome said looking up at him.
“Deal,” Inuyasha said looking down at her.
Their eyes met. They were about to kiss, but…
“Kagome!” Hojo cried entering the room. “What’s wrong?! Oh.” He saw them about to kiss each other.
The two stopped and looked towards Hojo.
“Am I interrupting something?” Hojo asked.
Kagome and Inuyasha let each other go. Kagome blushed and looked down at the ground. Inuyasha blushed, crossed his arms, and looked away.
“So, what exactly is going on?” Hojo asked.
“You would think Inuyasha would learn,” Naraku said. “No matter what he does, he will not escape my gaze.”
“His love for Kagome seems to deepen rapidly now that he and her have admitted their feelings for each other,” Kanna said. “This will truly make her his weakness.”
“Yes, and when the time is right, I will use his weakness against him,” Naraku said.
“Like you did with Ryouken?” Kanna asked.
“Yes,” Naraku said.
“Oh, I see. So, all those illnesses were just to cover the fact that you were off in another era trying to save the world?” Hojo asked.
“In a way, yeah,” Kagome said.
“And Inuyasha isn’t actually you r cousin from China, but a half dog demon and half human boy?”
“Yeah,” Kagome said.
“Heh. It actually depends on your definition of boy,” Inuyasha said. “I was seventeen when I was put to sleep. When I awoke, fifty years had passed making me sixty-seven, but I hadn’t aged at all. So, it actually depends on how you look at it.”
“Kagome, why did you lie to me?” Hojo asked.
“I had no choice in the matter. Hojo, you’re not going to tell anyone, are you?” Kagome said.
“No,” Hojo said. “Are you and Kagome together, Inuyasha?”
“Huh? Um, not that it’s any of your business, but yeah,” Inuyasha said.
“Oh, I see,” Hojo said.
“Hojo, this isn’t how I had wanted to ell you,” Kagome said. “I’m sorry if I’ve hurt you in any way.”
“Don’t be. You’ve done nothing wrong,” Hojo said.
“Kagome,” Inuyasha said, “stay put.”
“Huh? Why?” Kagome asked. She felt hot air on her neck. She turned her head to see a giant spider. She screamed and ran behind Inuyasha.
“I thought I told you to stay put,” Inuyasha said getting his claws ready.
“Are you crazy?! No one would’ve stayed put if that was behind them,” Kagome said.
“Whatever,” Inuyasha said.
“Well, my mom’s not home, so we don’t have to worry about her,” Hojo said.
“Good. That means less explaining,” Inuyasha said. “Now you two get out of here.”
“Inuyasha, you can’t fight that thing with just your claws,” Kagome said.
“Looks like I don’t have a choice in the matter,” Inuyasha said as the spider shot out its venom. He grabbed Hojo and Kagome and jumped out of the way of the venom. “Now, get out of here.” He charged after the spider after letting Hojo and Kagome go.
Hojo and Kagome hid in the kitchen.
“We have to do something,” Kagome said.
“Yeah, but what?” Hojo asked.
Rin knocked on the door.
“Be there in a minute,” a voice said. Rin pressed her ear against the door. “Guys, hide in the closet or something.”
“Are you kidding me? I’m not going in there,” a second voice said.
“Neither am I,” another said.
“Obey the boy,” a cold voice said.
“Yes,” the other two voices said.
There was a sound like a door closing.
The door opened. Standing there was Ryouken.
“Hi,” Rin said. “Riku.”
Ryouken lowered his hood. “So, you know.”
Rin hugged him. “I’ve missed you so much.”
Riku hugged her back. “So have I, Rin, but you have to go.”
“Why?” Rin asked.
“Because…Rin, I can’t say,” Riku said.
“You’re with your sister and Naraku, aren’t you?” Rin asked.
Riku let out a sigh. “Yeah, I am. I’m also with Kagura.”
“She lived?” Rin asked.
“Rin, you have to keep this a secret,” Riku said.
“My lips are sealed,” Rin said.
Inuyasha jumped onto the spider. The spider threw him into the wall and went towards the kitchen.
“It’s coming,” Hojo said.
“I’m thinking. I’m thinking,” Kagome said.
Hojo started searching in the drawers and cabinets. “There has to be something in here that gets rid of bugs.”
“Gets rid of bugs? Bug spray!” Kagome said. “Hojo, do you have any bug spray?”
“Bug spray? Oh. It’s in the bathroom,” Hojo said.
“Okay,” Kagome said. Great. How am I suppose to get there?
Inuyasha got up and ran in the spider’s way. “Oh no you don’t.”
The spider shot out its venom.
Inuyasha dodged it. “You’ll have to do better than that.”
Kagome took this as her chance to get the bug spray. She got up and ran over to the stairs. She looked back to make sure the spider hadn’t seen her and ran up the stairs.
“Be careful,” Hojo said. He went to the back door and grabbed a baseball bat. “Now’s it my turn to help.” He went back to the living room and charged at the spider.
“That idiot,” Inuyasha said.
Kagome opened the cabinet. “Nope, not there.” She opened the one at the bottom. “Ah-ha! Found it!” She grabbed the can of bug spray. She ran down the stairs.
The spider threw Hojo into the wall.
“Ow, my neck,” Hojo said. He got up. The spider came towards him.
“Run!” Inuyasha cried.
“I’ve got it!” Kagome cried as she entered the room.
The spider turned towards Kagome and started going after her.
“Kagome!” Inuyasha cried.
Kagome screamed as the spider picked her up. “Let me go!”
“Do as she says,” Inuyasha said.
“I will let her go. Just not the way you want me to,” the spider said.
“You won’t kill her,” Hojo said. “We won’t let you.”
“I won’t; however, Naraku will,” the spider said.
“So, he sent you, eh,” Inuyasha said. “Should’ve known.” Wait! What does he want with Kagome?
Kagome sprayed the bug spray in the spider’s eyes. It cried out in pain and dropped her. Hojo caught her while Inuyasha killed the spider.
Inuyasha went over to Kagome. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah. You?” Kagome said.
“Yeah,” Inuyasha said. “I think we should go back to my era.”
Kagome nodded in agreement.
“I’ll cover for you while you’re gone,” Hojo said. “But the spider and why the house is damaged is a different story.”
“We’ll help you clean up before we leave,” Kagome said.
Hojo smiled.
“What is taking your sister so long?” Kagome’s grandpa asked.
“I dunno,” Sota said.
Kagome held Inuyasha’s hand as he and she walked to her house. He also held her hand.
“Kagome, I’ve been thinking about something,” Inuyasha said.
“Yeah?” Kagome asked looking up at him.
“Maybe we should cool it down a bit,” Inuyasha said.
“What do you mean?” Kagome asked.
“I don’t know how to say this, but, Kagome, I’m breaking up with you,” Inuyasha said.
“What? But why? Inuyasha, What did I do?” Tears went down her cheeks.
Inuyasha let her hand go. “You didn’t do anything. Listen, I’ll meet you in my era.” He ran off.
Kagome stood there as the wind blew. Tears continued going down her face. So, then it’s over. Just like that. I should’ve known. She looked towards the sunset. Inuyasha.
