Being in the wrong place at the wrong time almost proved fatal for Reiji Azuma when he witnesses the brutal murder of a reporter, but his strength, insight, and survival skills were noticed by Inferno bigwigs. These traits essentially saved his life, but also, placed him in the hands of this ruthless organization.
Once no more than an average Japanese tourist, Reiji is brainwashed and trained to become one of the most feared assassins. Memories from his past are erased, and he is given the name Zwei (means 2 in German). He often works together with Ein (#1 in German), a pretty young female assassin who is so quick, mysterious and deadly that she is known as the Phantom. The two, working as human robots, carry out their orders swiftly and without mercy. No individual target is beyond their reach. Can Reiji break free from these deadly chains and return to the person he once was, or is his fate sealed since that fateful day?
Phantom is based on the video novel game, Phantom of the Inferno, released back in the year 2000. The game had an American release in 2003. Based on the path one takes in the game, it could turn out as a dark action or a romantic drama. As far as the 26 episode anime series, if you're a fan of action, intrigue, and espionage, this is one you won't want to miss.
