Uchouten Kazoku

Alternate Name: The Eccentric Family

Yasaburo Shimogamo may look like an ordinary human, but that is just a guise. He is actually a tanuki posing as a human, and he's not the only one. A tanuki is known as a Japanese raccoon dog. In Japanese folklore, the legendary tanuki has a reputation for being mischievous, jolly, and a master of disguise and shape-shifting. The premise of Uchouten Kozaku basically follows this folklore, especially with one particular character, Yasaburo. He (who often appears as a "she" when needed) is living his life freely, hoping that everyday be more interesting than the next.

For a little background on the series, it opens as follows: 1200 years since Emperor Kammu settled on a location for the palace, humans live in the city, tanuki crawl the earth, and tengu fly through the air. Since the Heian era relocation, humans, tanuki, and tengu have maintained a delicate balance. That's what keeps the great wheel of this city turning round and round. More fun than anything is watching that wheel spin.

After the first two episode, I have found Uchouten Kazoku to be a fun series with a mix of humor and drama. This appears to be a gentle story appropriate for all ages. Let's see what transpires in the upcoming episodes. I look forward to them.
