Aoshi is the "leader" of an elite group of ninjas called "The Oniwaban Group". He was so skillful that he became the protector of the Edo Castle at the age of 15.
The Oniwaban Group was considered to be a collection of some of the most elite fighters of the Revolution. After the Revolution, the organization was mostly dissolved. While most of the members were able to reintegrate themselves into society, four of the best in the organization had devoted too much of their lives to perfecting their fighting skills that they were unable to give up fighting. Seeing it as his duty as their leader, Aoshi stayed with them, even turning down offers for positions in the new government. As devoted as he is to them, these four men are equally devoted to Aoshi and are even willing to sacrifice their lives for him.
After the revolution, Aoshi and four other members of the Oniwaban began working for the shady businessman, Kanryu Takeda. It was during that time that he had his first battle with Kenshin. A battle which resulted in defeat. So obsessed with being the strongest, Aoshi vowed to fight Kenshin again one day.
Aoshi is always quite serious and seems devoid of human emotion. One of the few times he shows a sensitive side is right after he buries his fallen comrades (killed by Kanryu). Aoshi vowed to return someday and place flowers on their graves. Some other characteristics include his preference for tea (his body has no tolerance for alcohol) and long hours of meditation.
