Megumi is a medical expert, which is not surprising since her family spans many generations of doctors. Sadly, her father became involved with the Izu war resulting in the disappearance of her father, mother, and brothers.
Megumi came to Tokyo five years ago, and became a doctor's apprentice. That doctor was partners with Kanryu Takeda, but the partners had differences. Eventually the doctor was killed, and Megumi was forced to make opium in his place. Many times she thought of committing suicide, but the desire to someday be reunited with her family kept that from happening.
After Megumi was rescued by Kenshin and the others, she became an apprentice for Dr. Gensai. Taking care of the sick is her atonement for the wrongs Kanryu forced her to do.
