Sanosuke enters the series in episode #4 carrying the name Zanza..."fighter for hire". He was described as an arrogant lone wolf who bases his prices on how much fun he had beating the guy up. They say those unfortunate enough to fight him are plagued with nightmares of the symbol on his back that stands for "bad".
Truth be told, Sanosuke has a gut wrenching past that has left him hating Imperialists. When Sano was young, he was part of the Sekihoutai...said to be a "false army". It was a group made up of mostly farmers and traders....an advance unit for the government. In charge was Captain Sagara, whom Sanosuke idolized so much that he took his name. Sadly, the Imperialist government used the Sekihoutai as scapegoats and massacred the idealistic members. Sano and his young friend managed to escape.
Sanosuke became a fighter for hire, because he could forget everything while fighting. When he was hired to kill the legendary Battousai but was ultimately defeated, he resolved to join Kenshin and use his strength to help and protect. He continues to wear the bad symbol for it is a reminder of where he came from.
