Yahiko first appears in episode #2. His father was a samurai who fought against the new government and was killed in the Revolution. Shortly after, his mother took ill and was hospitalized. When she, too, passed away, The young boy was basically adopted by the Shuei Yakuza syndicate. The ruthless mob boss and his henchmen forced Yahiko to steal in order to pay back his mother's (non-existent) hospital debt.
Kenshin fought for Yahiko's freedom and won. The boy, full of pride, was against training under Miss Kaoru, and expected Kenshin to train him. When Kenshin refused and saw Miss Kaoru in action, Yahiko began learning the Kasshin style of swordsmanship. You could say Yahiko and Miss Kaoru have a brother/sister type relationship....and that includes the fighting.
Yahiko doesn't always show respect to women (often calling them ugly) or most elders for that matter. He can be stubborn and determined, however, under the supervision of Kenshin and Miss Kaoru, Yahiko has potential for a promising future. .
