Ichigo and Renji are healed completely by captain Kirinji, and they move up to captain Kirio Hikifune's palace where they are quickly fed all sorts of ancient Soul Society dishes, filled with strong spiritual pressure, before being sent up to captain Oetsu Nimaiya's palace, the man who created all Zanpakuto.
Meanwhile, Captain Kyoraku is appointed as new head captain. He selects his lieutenant Nanao Ise to come join him as a lieutenant in the 1st Division. He, also, promotes Yamamoto's previous 3rd Seat, Genshiro Okikiba to lieutenant, and decrees that the recovering Captain Zaraki is to be taught "zanjutsu" - an all-style encompassing sworsdmanship. He will be taught by 4th Division Captain Unohana, who is revealed to be the most notorious criminal in Soul Society history and the founder of the 11th Division and the first Kenpachi. Her real name is Yachiru Unohana.
Unohana and Zaraki begin their duel in the infinite underground prison, Muken. Zaraki recalls how he used to admire Unohana, from their first meeting on, when he scarred her chest. Unohana states that he has become far weaker from then, and she will push him to the brink of death and revive him repeatedly to unlock his full potential.
