It's been three years since the Titan attack that took Eren's mother.
Eren, Mikasa, and Armin have enlisted in the military...specifically the 104 Trainees Squad. Eren has difficulty mastering the three dimensional maneuver gear, which could mean he would be shipped out into the fields with the other trainees who couldn't hack it.
When all looks hopeless, Instructor Keith Shadis has Eren switch gear with one of the other trainees. It turns out that Eren's gear was defective. He'll make a fine soldier after all.
