Beyblade V-Force, Episode 5 Summary, “Guess Who’s Back In Town?”

After 4 episodes of almost nothing but Tyson, episode #5 is almost exclusively Kai, and it is awesome. A year’s absence has not changed our favorite beyblader. He is still silent, still a lone wolf, and still has that steely “Leave me alone or I’ll have to hurt you” stare. The animators have changed Kai’s appearance a little. Kai’s eyes have changed from brown to a dark gunmetal gray, which suits him better. His hair is now two-tone light gray and black, and his overhanging bangs cast sinister shadows across his eyes. We only see Kai in his school uniform in this episode, and yes, Kai IS wearing a stud in his left ear! Even in uniform Kai is a nonconformist, because he constantly wears his tie loosened, his jacket and shirt collar unbuttoned, and his shirttails out. As for his physical prowess, I think the animators have been watching too much Dragonball Z. Kai has all the classic Goku moves, including that extrasensory perception for incoming attacks, that slight tilt of the head to avoid missiles, the ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound, and that cool relaxed “didn’t even break a sweat” stance after major explosions. I can’t wait to see him in action in his season 2 beyblading outfit.

The episode opens with the usual quick retrospective by Kenny. Tyson and Kenny are on a dock, looking out where the prison ship sank. Dizzi can find very little information about the ship in the news, and Tyson and Kenny wonder who these new enemies are. Suddenly Hillary appears, and Tyson tries to make a break for it. However, Hillary doesn’t want to make Tyson clean the classroom, she wants to know about last night’s kidnapping. Tyson and Hillary start to argue as usual, so Hillary asks Kenny for information. Kenny takes them to his bedroom above his family’s dingy noodle restaurant. Tyson and Kenny deduce they have two sets of enemies, the guys in the black suits, and Ozuma and the other cloaked bladers. They deduce that Ozuma and company wanted the bit beasts to come out and battle for some sinister reason. That is why Dragoon refused to come out. While Kenny and Tyson discuss options, the clueless Hillary constantly demands to know what a bit beast is. Kenny uploads the Bladebreakers’ team photo from the world championship, with all the team members smiling with medals around their necks. Hillary thinks Kai is cute (hee-hee). Kenny suddenly realizes that Ozuma and the other cloaked bladers may go after Kai and Dranzer, too.

Cut to a black luxury car driving in the rain. Kai is being driven to his first day at an exclusive all-boys prep school. Kai’s very polite chauffer comments that he packed everything for “Master Kai” but he didn’t see Dranzer. Kai just goes “Hmpf.” At the prep school Kai doesn’t even wait for an umbrella, just walks through the rain by himself. Inside the prep school we see several kids beyblading. The school champion wins, a redheaded kid named Wyatt. The kids see Kai walk by, and the starstruck Wyatt runs up to Kai gushing with compliments and a request that Kai teach him his techniques. Kai just glares and continues walking. Wyatt apologizes and introduces himself properly, but Kai doesn’t even turn around.

Later that night Wyatt finds Kai staring out a window and gives a more detailed apology, he has been such a fan of Kai for so long. Kai replies, “Hey kid, just leave me alone, OK? Later, kid.” Suddenly a red beyblade crashes through the window, smashes the overhead lights, and crashes out another window. Wyatt is on the floor among the broken glass, Kai is astonished then angry. Kai jumps out the 2nd-story window and runs into the wooded grounds. There he finds a beefy jerk with blond hair and tanned skin who speaks bad action movie dialogue. He is NOT wearing the hooded cape that the other challengers had. The jerk wants to challenge Kai to a beybattle and take Dranzer, but Kai simply says, “I’ve quit beyblading.” When Kai starts to walk away the jerk launches an energy beyblade at Kai, who just leans aside to dodge it. The blade hits a large tree, which crashes down on Kai. Wyatt, who is watching from the bushes, calls out a warning. But when the dust clears Kai is just standing there as cool as ice, eyes closed, hands in his pockets. He shouts one word: “Leave!” Other prep school students and teachers come running, and the jerk takes off. The other students and teachers loudly wonder what is going on, if Kai and Wyatt are OK. Kai just silently walks back inside.

Another sunny day in school, Wyatt asks his friends why Kai gave up beyblading. His friends say that Kai couldn’t find a worthy challenger, that they aren’t in his league, and that Wyatt should just stop talking about Kai. During this exchange we see Kai doing normal school stuff, like zoning out in math class and listening to his Walkman while staring out a window. Cut to Wyatt looking out a second story classroom window, wondering how great it would be to be on a world-class beyblade team, if just for a little while. Suddenly he sees Kai jump over the prep school wall and sneak off into town. Wyatt follows. Kai walks down dingy streets and up a metal staircase to a second-story room. It is Kai’s trophy room and hangout. It has a sofa, big-screen TV and stereo system, a practice bey-stadium on the floor, pictures and framed medals on the walls, trophies, and a glass display case containing Dranzer’s beyblade and several other blades (including replicas of the Bladebreakers’ blades?) Wyatt comes in, gushing over everything like a fanboy finding a superhero’s secret headquarters. Kai doesn’t reply at first, but then they talk. Wyatt asks Kai if he retired because there wasn’t anyone good enough to fight against, and if Kai would like to battle Tyson again. Kai admits he would like to battle Tyson, it would be an interesting and tough fight. But it will never happen. Kai is lost in thought, imagining Tyson as his opponent. Suddenly Kai senses danger, and the jerk’s red beyblade bursts in the window, smashing up everything in the room. Kai kicks out a window and tells Wyatt to follow him, but Wyatt is pinned down and scared. Kai grabs Wyatt by one hand and Dranzer’s blade by the other, throws Wyatt out the second-story window down onto some cardboard boxes, and jumps out himself. Kai asks Wyatt if he is OK. The jerk bursts into the room to find Kai has escaped. Cut to Kai and Wyatt under a train bridge, where Kai is hiding Dranzer’s blade in some old crates under a tarp. Wyatt again apologizes for screwing up and wonders who the jerk is. Kai has no clue.

It’s another day, and Kai is in class. Wyatt’s friends come running up, asking Kai if he knows where Wyatt is. It seems Wyatt found a note under a train bridge, and has gone off to fight some big guy. Kai, angry and concerned, runs out. Under the train bridge he finds Dranzer’s blade is missing from its hiding place. He also finds a crumpled-up note, in which the jerk challenges Kai to meet him on top of a building at 3 o’clock. Kai vows to go. Cut to the roof of a multi-story parking structure surrounded by a waist-high chain-link fence. We see the jerk and Wyatt facing each other across a bey-stadium. Wyatt says he is there to fight in Kai’s place, and he has Dranzer to prove it. The jerk says that doesn’t make sense. Kai suddenly appears and demands his blade back. Wyatt says he is going to beat the jerk to prove to Kai that he is a worthy opponent. Kai says, “Okay, suit yourself. But when you lose, don’t come crying to me.” Wyatt and the jerk launch their blades, and the jerk is completely dominating the battle. Wyatt tries to call out Dranzer, but of course Dranzer doesn’t obey, and Wyatt wonders why not. The jerk lets loose a devastating lightning-bolt attack called Spark Hammer, and Kai is astonished by the power. The attack blasts Wyatt over the fence, Kai barely manages to catch his hand and haul him back to safety. Wyatt is unconscious, and an angry Kai demands why the jerk did that. The jerk replies because he felt like it, and because Kai and Dranzer are all washed up.

A steely-eyed Kai finally agrees to battle, saying if he wins the jerk leaves for good. They launch their blades and begin a high-speed pounding battle that ranges all over the roof. Wyatt wakes up and cheers Kai on. The jerk unleashes a powerful air vortex attack which is sucking in Kai’s blade. Kai is amazed and wonders where such power comes from. Kai calls out Dranzer just as the jerk unleashes another spark hammer attack, there is a tremendous lightning-bolt explosion. Kai is thrown back against a wall, and Wyatt against the fence. When the explosion clears both blades have been blasted out, and the bey-stadium is only rubble. The jerk, astonished, calls the battle a draw and leaves. Kai slowly picks up his blade, cracks his first smile in the whole episode, and then begins to laugh. “Looks like I’ve finally found a worthy opponent. And it’s time to take Dranzer out of retirement, Wyatt.” Kai laughs like a maniac into the sky as the episode closes.
